… are harder to come up with than expected! Coming up with them not too much of a struggle I suppose, but having to stand behind them is a completely different thing. Some of the taglines I’ve come up with today have made me blush – they’re actually that pompous.
I need a tagline for my current business venture, which for now is slightly non-existing, but ideally consists of me writing whatever comes my writing way. I figured I should start somewhere instead of just talking about it, and elance.com came up as an option. As it turns out, a tagline is required when you register at their site. So here I am. Trying to think of something brilliant, persuasive, non-threatening, truthful, confident and yet not insulting, to say in one sentence. Also, the tagline should say what I have to offer, like… “I can write, you can’t – hire me”, except not that. Mostly because it’s sad and wrong. In every kind of way.
“One word ahead” – that’s OK, but who am I supposed to be ahead of? The person who wants to hire me? I feel that tagline is an insult waiting to happen. Also, there’s something wrong with “The words that matter”, or “When words matter”. “To you”. “When words matter to you”.
I’m puzzled.

All I can think of is: 'I can, therefore I do.'
ReplyDeleteI'll ponder it when I drive the kids to school and let you know if I come up with anything.
(BTW...I personally like 'I can write, you can't-hire me'. Shows you have confidence and humor. May be just what someone's looking for.)
I like your "I can, therefore I do" - why don't you use that for your booksellingbusiness? :D You could print it on t-shirts and everything! "I read, therefore I sell. Books." Hehe, OK, now _that_ was baaad. I'm crap at this tagline thing!
ReplyDeletePoor people who can't actually write, though. And I'm all like stepping on them. But wait... if they can read, they can write, right… Ooooh.
